Meezer and Marmalade Monday

Meowm here:

The millie bed is very loved!

Junior and Orion continue to do well together. No snuggling together, but that may come with some time.

Orion had a cough yesterday morning that really scares me. I have never heard a cat cough as much as he did. It was like he wanted to throw something up, but nothing was coming out. Plus he seemed to be having trouble breathing. I think he had 4 lengthy coughing sessions before he settled down. He still does the kind of gagging thing, like he is trying to get something out of his throat, but just every now and then. I am watching him closely and hoping for the best...I am worried, but have no idea what the problem could even begin to be. I also hope that it isn't something that can affect Junior.

**Meowm is gonna treat Orion for hairballs for now. There has been no more coughing since the first episode.** Purrayers are welcome and appreciated that this will be what the problem is.

Meowm,

That cough really concerns me. Please consult your vet...it could be very serious.

I love the little bed! I wonder if Spooky would like that...?

Hi Orion,

Rosie tells me that you are having a little bit of a cough. Right now I do not have information about coughing on my website (www.felinedirect.com) but I will be putting up information today in your honor!

A cough can result from a multitude of things. As we all know, spring is here and that causes allergies not only in humans but also in cats! Changes in season also mean that it is once again Shedding Season. So the cough could also be a result of a large hairball. If you aren't experiencing any other symptoms: watery eyes, runny nose, lethargy, lack of appetite than one of those two options is likely. You might also be developing kitty asthma.

Hookworms and roundworms may also be the cause of a cough, so your Mommie should check your stools and bring a sample into the vet for checking.

Unfortunately a cough may also result from heartworm, so I hope that you are receiving a heartworm preventative.

And finally, if your cough persists or gets worse it may be the start of a larger illness, but I do not want to scare you too much.

Here is a really helpful link:

Hope this helps!

-Cecil

I hope that cough isn't anything too serious but it should probably been seen to by the good old vet.

Great bed by the way!

Hey that's cool you're sharing the bed. Try not to worry about coughing, its probably just a hairball. I coughed in such a scary way when I was a kitten and I did it all of the time. Stressful different times will bring on flare-ups of the herpes virus (don't worry, if you've ever had a URI you most likely have dormant herpes its no biggie) and it will go away on its own or you may need antibiotics to help it if it gets worse. Hack up the hairball my friend!!

Upper respiratory infections are very common in cats and Orion should be checked out. If he has a bug, it's possible Junior can get it, too.
