Nikodemus needs your help!
This is one of my friends, Nikodemus. Well, Nik likes to scratch the carpet on one of the stairs in his home. Now his beans put up wit this behavior in the past, but now they have gotten new carpet and want him to stop.. I know, I know, silly beans, he is only doing what cats do. Anyway, his beans are looking for ways to help him stop this behavior. He can't wear softpaws (softclaws) whatever those things are names, cause he is an indoor/outdoor cat and need his claws for protection while he is outside. HIs beans have built him a scratching post, but so far he is not very interested in it. Any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited!
Everyone have a Happy Turkey Day tmorrow!!

Can they cover the stair area until he starts enjoying the new scratching post?
Cover the cat post in catnip and make sure it's in an area that people are in, so the cat isn't isolated when he is scenting.
I don't know! I always scratch outside on a piece of wood. Maybe they could find a board for him to scratch?
We saw somewhere that a sisal rug made a good place to scratch. We like those cardboard tray things.
A couple of suggestions: either spray him with a water bottle when he's scratching the spot they don't want him to scratch, or, slowly convert him to being an indoor-only cat, and use SoftPaws. They could also try a different scratching post, made of a different material. Some scratching materials appeal more to some cats than others.
I remember Nikodemus! I have two ideas:
1. If you go to Home Depot, you can get this clear plastic stuff with sticky on the back. It is meant to put on your carpet to protect it while you are moving. Since it is adhesive on the back, it does not move around, and the adhesive is safe for carpets. I do not think Nik would like to scratch or walk on it, and after a little while, the plastic could come off to see how he does.
2. I have a very wonderful scratching post. It is so good, I do not scratch anywhere else. And it stays nice-looking no matter how much I use it! Try this:

Good luck to Nik!
Hi Nik!! I remember you! I am a very good girl about scratching and only use my post but every now and then those steps...they beckon. What about icky smelly stuff to keep you away?

Hmm... Efurrybody has such good suggestions!!
We used to scratch a specific part of the floor (the seam of two different carpets) and the beans covered it with a small area rug (that they didn't mind us scratching), so now we scratch that instead. That prob'ly wouldn't work well on the steps, though.
We also have a sisal scratching thing that isn't a post (so it's kind of flat to the floor) and a cardboard tray scratcher. Maybe Nikodemus likes scratching flat things better and those would work?
We hopes you're still feelin' better and also that your Meowm can help the stray kitty feel better. It's furry nice of her to help him/her.
Happy Thanksgiving Junior and your mum.
Hmm ... one needs to think about this ...
Meanwhile, Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow!
... Well, I'd suggest that the scratching post not have carpeting on it (gives the wrong idea). There's a cedar wood one we ran across online recently. If he likes to scratch in one particular spot, that spot could always be covered up for awhile.
Out of ideas ...
Yr friend,
Luxie
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you all.

I had a similar problem once and solved it this way. I squirted Josephine with water whenever she scratched the couch and gave her a treat whenever she used her scratching post. She got the idea pretty quickly.
