Tabby Tuesday

Well, my food saga continues. Meowm brought home a variety of stinky goodness last Saturday for me (us) to try. We want nothing to do with the Natural Balance stinky goodness, no matter what flavor. We are however, eating the dry Natural Balance in the salmon flavor. Did we tell you about the BFF stinky goodness? Well, it stands for Best Feline Friend and it was delicious!!!! However, it only comes in fish flavors, and Meowm worries about mercury. Does anyone know if it is a higher quality fish food, is mercury still a concern? Dr. Daisy, what say you?

We actually had BFF the weekend before last, so on to the more current trials. Meowm brought home EVO in beef and venison flavors. We loved the beef and the venison was purrty good, but not as good as the beef. Meowm deemed this one she would buy us again.

Next up was one called Weruva in the steak and frites flavor. We guess frites stands for potatoes of some sort. When Meowm opened this she said it looked like something maybe she should be eating. And this food is made at a place where they make people food. She said the "beef" was shredded, but looked more like it should be pork or chicken. There was also little squares of white and orange stuff. Meowm thinks this was potatoes and pumpkin, and possible sweet potatoes. It was very interesting and we gobbled it up! This is a definite buy again stinky goodness.

The last can was by Instinct, and it was rabbit. Sorry all our rabbit friends. We loved this one as much as the Weruva one. Meowm said of course we liked those two, they are the most expensive. The Weruva is, if she remembers correctly $1.99 a can and the Instinct is $2.30 a can, for 5.5 ounce cans. Meowm said we may not be able to have as much stinky goodness as we used to. Bummer!!!!!

At this point in time, Meowm thinks she will alternate the BFF with the Weruva and Instinct. The BFF only comes in the 3 ounce cans and is 90 cents a can. She says we will stick with the Natural Balance dry, till she can get our stinky goodness figured and budgeted out.

Now, does anyone know of some good treats? Ones that don't have chicken in them and a bunch of extra pointless stuff in them? Course, our Temptations might be okay with all this other hypo-allergenic/grain free/healthy food.

We were eating Instinct venison...or maybe it was rabbit...until they must have changed their formula, because we won't touch it anymore.

Be careful of fish/fish flavours as a steady diet. Fish lends itself to the formation of urinary tract crystals, and if you were neutered at a young age and have a narrow urethra, you likely would be at higher risk for that than a kitty that was neutered as an adult. Your mom can Google about it.

Have fun doing all your taste-testing. LOL. We should say smelling, since it's the scent, not the taste per se. :-)

This fish list is at Monterey Bay Aquarium: http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/sfw_recommendations.aspx

And they keep their lists up to date and tell you why the recommend against certain fish. I think if you alternate with some other foods that should be good. We like alternating (and the Woman wishes we would) because it means that if one manufacturer has a problem we still have others--and also there may be trace nutrients that are in one food and not another.

What fun you guys are having sampling all that yummy food. We can't answer your questions about mercury - sorry - hopefully your kitty friends will be better informed.
We ourselves love tuna and salmon - just a little added to our kibble for variety.
(Martha of course will eat anything but Bailey can go off her food from time to time.)
Our mum doesn't like us to have it to often. We love chicken the best.
The rabbit flavoured kibble is good.
Would it be helpful if, when we finally catch a rabbit, we post it to you to try fresh?
love and kisses
Martha and Bailey xxx

We cannot eat anything with fish in it because we think it makes Harley's EGC act up, so we don't know too much about the mercury issue. We do eat canned food about 2 days a week, when we are not eating raw. Weruva is one of our favorites! We also like Before Grain, and we have had the Instincts Rabbit and it was delicious, too.

Grandma Lucy's makes some very delicious and healthy freeze-dried treats. Our favorites are the chicken liver and the roasted chicken, but they make other flavors, too.

I'm so glad you are finding some healthy foods that you like!

ps: We sometimes eat EVO, but you should note that Natura foods (which makes EVO) is being acquired by P&G. If you continue with the EVO, keep a close eye on the ingredients to make sure the quality/ingredients remain the same. Here is a good Forum thread on Catster you might want to check out:
